Jimmy Swaggart’s Death: The End of a Polarizing Era

Renowned televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, whose fiery sermons once captivated millions before his ministry was derailed by prostitution scandals, has died at 90. His passing was announced on his public Facebook page, though no official cause was given. Swaggart had suffered cardiac arrest in June 2025, leaving him in poor health before his death.

From Poverty to Pentecostal Superstar

Born in Ferriday, Louisiana, Swaggart grew up in poverty but found his calling early, claiming he heard God’s voice at age 8. His musical talent—shared with famous cousins Jerry Lee Lewis (rock ‘n’ roll legend) and Mickey Gilley (country star)—helped shape his dynamic preaching style, blending gospel music with fiery Pentecostal sermons.

By the 1980s, Swaggart’s TV ministry reached 2 million households, earning an estimated $142 million annually. His Baton Rouge megachurch, radio shows, and Bible college cemented his status as a religious powerhouse.

The Scandal That Shattered His Empire

Swaggart’s downfall came in 1988 when he was photographed with a prostitute in New Orleans. The images, reportedly orchestrated by a rival preacher, led to a tearful on-air confession where he begged forgiveness—without admitting specifics.

  • Defrocked by the Assemblies of God after refusing a rehabilitation program.
  • Paid $1.8 million to settle a lawsuit with the rival minister who exposed him.
  • Arrested again in 1991 with another sex worker, further tarnishing his reputation.

Despite the scandals, Swaggart continued preaching, though his audience dwindled. His son, Donnie Swaggart, now leads the family ministry, vowing to continue his father’s work.

Controversial Quotes and Lasting Influence

Swaggart was no stranger to backlash:

  • Called Catholicism "a false religion" and blamed Jewish suffering on "rejecting Christ."
  • In 2004, he sparked outrage by saying he’d "kill" a gay man who flirted with him (later apologizing).

Yet, his global online ministry and Bible college endure, proving his legacy is complex and divisive.

Funeral Arrangements and Survivors

A public viewing will be held on July 12, followed by a celebration of life service on July 13 at his Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge. He is survived by his wife, Frances, son Donnie, and multiple grandchildren
